Paul Browning, the ex-sheriff of Harlan, Kentucky, turned up dead in 2002. Years earlier he had been kicked out of office for plotting to kill his political enemies, but was running again and likely to win. His former deputy, Roger Hall, was tied up in drug running with Dwayne Harris, the owner of a sports memorabilia shop. Hall, worried that he'd be out of a job if Browning won, paid Harris to kill the ex-sheriff.
The crime did not go smoothly, though remained unsolved for seven years until Harris finally gave up Hall. Dwayne Harris believed that Hall (who was also sleeping with Harris's wife) had stolen his baseball cards and intended to sell them. Harris laundered his drug money through his memorabilia store and valued his card collection most of all. With Harris talking, Detective Michael Cornett was able to put together all the pieces of the murder and bring the case together.
